DIABETES MELLITUS
Diabetes Mellitus and the clinical dietician
The main types of diabetes mellitus are type I (insulin-dependent diabetes) and type II, while there is also diabetes which presents during pregnancy.
In all types of diabetes, the role of a proper clinical dietician is as important as that of a good doctor or expert in diabetes.
In the case of type II diabetes where treatment has already begun by taking pills or by injecting insulin, there is a high rate of success in reducing the medication taken when the patient starts a balanced diet under the supervision of a clinical dietician. In some cases patients may even stop taking insulin altogether and only rely on pills but such a course of action requires close partnership with the patient’s doctor!
