DEPRESSION

Proper diet and its role in reducing depression and melancholy

Food plays an important role in preventing and treating depression. Most of us are already aware that the incidence of depression in both men and women is constantly on the rise. What we perhaps do not know is that by following simple pieces of dietary advice, the likelihood of the onset of depression can be reduced.

Research has shown that there are specific foods or combinations of foods that improve our mental health, by promoting the production of serotonin, a hormone associated with good moods. It is no coincidence that the action of various antidepressants is based on serotonin production.

Clinical dieticians can play a very important role since there is a high degree of reduction in medication intake when patients start eating a balanced diet.
